January 13, 2013 was an important day in the fight against elder abuse with the coming into force of new federal legislation. The Protecting Canada’s Seniors Act is a significant step in the fight to eliminate elder abuse. Under the new legislation, an offence that had a significant impact on the victims due to their age and other factors will now be considered an aggravating factor for sentencing purposes. This will result in longer sentences for those involving seniors. For more information see www.seniors.gc.ca
