Things to know about Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA)
Have you heard? As of March 15, 2016, foreign nationals from visa-exempt countries wishing to enter Canada by air or who will be entering Canada while transiting to another country must have an Electronic Travel Authorization or eTA. Each person who will enter or transit through Canada must apply for their own eTA.
Holding an eTA is not required for foreign nationals who hold a valid Canadian visa, U.S. Citizens, Canadian citizens (including dual citizens), and Canadian Permanent Residents. For a complete list of visa-exempt countries who require an eTA, please click here:http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/visas-all.asp#eta
There is currently a leniency period in effect until fall 2016, where those who do not have an eTA can still board their flight, providing they have appropriate travel documents, but in preparation of this period ending, why not apply for your eTA today?
The entire process can be completed online, and only takes about 10 minutes to do. To apply, you need:
- A valid passport from a visa-exempt country
- If you are a lawful Permanent Resident of the USA without a passport, you can use your U.S. Refugee Travel Document (I-571) or your valid Permit to Re-Enter the United States (I-327)
- A credit card to pay the CAD $7.00 fee
- A valid email address
Once you have everything you need, you are ready to apply for your eTA! Please visit IRCC’s website to start the process by clicking “Apply for an eTA”: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/eta-start.asp
